University of Memphis Professor Cited for DUI

On Saturday, May 21, a University of Memphis music professor was cited for driving while intoxicated.

According to authorities, John Baur, who teaches theory and composition at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music was driving a Mercedes C300 and was in a two vehicle accident when he was hit by a Nissan Maxima which allegedly ran a red light and hit the right rear passenger door of Baur’s vehicle as it was turning at an intersection.

One of Baur’s passengers was 54 year old George E. Mabon who was the former vice president of human resources at Memphis International Airport. Mabon died at a Baton Rouge hospital and another passenger, former Memphis Catholic priest Rev. John Pitzer, was hospitalized. The three were with a group from Memphis visiting Baton Rouge to attend an Episcopal ordination ceremony for Pitzer earlier that day.

Baur was charged with DUI and also with reckless operation and was released on $3,000 bond.
